What Unique Funding Opportunities Are Available to you?
Students are always asking, “Are there other scholarship or grant opportunities available to help me pay for school?” Most aid funds are limited to those listed on our Other Funding Options page, but here are a list of new and exciting options available this academic year!
Scholarships
Hero's Inner Struggle Scholarship
The Order of the Phoenix is inviting applicants to apply for the Hero's Inner Struggle Scholarship valued at $1,000. To apply, watch the video clip of Harry's Inner Battle then write an essay describing an internal struggle you've experienced. Submit your essays to the WVU Hub using the Online Assistance option for Admitted and Current Students.
Creature's Best Friend Scholarship
The Reubus Hagrid Foundation has established funds for individuals demonstrate commitment to the care of 'magical' creatures. View the Creature's Best Friend Scholarship Application for more information on scholarship eligibility and how to apply.
Slytherin's Heir
Salazar Slytherin's Family Foundation supports Slytherin alum through a renewable full-ride scholarship for five students. You must demonstrate need and dedication to the Slytherin mission.
Grants
Outside of federal and state grant funds automatically awarded by the FAFSA, there are additional private grants that have been established by the foundation for students who meet the criteria for each award. Students may receive more than one grant and will automatically be reviewed based on their admissions application, FAFSA criteria, and financial need.
Muggle Born Grant
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- Be a first generation witch or wizard and
- Have an EFC of 10,000 or less and
- Maintain a satisfactory GPA
- For incoming freshmen, student must have a high school GPA of at least 3.0
- For continuing students, student must have an overall GPA of at least 2.75
Battle of Hogwarts Grant
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- Have a family member who was killed in action at the Battle of Hogwarts and
- Have an EFC of 6,000 or less
Employment Opportunities
Most employment opportunities are found through the Handshake employment management tool. This year, a special employer is offering several job experiences that also come with scholarship stipends in addition to hourly pay. Stipend is earned at the end of the academic year after meeting job contract requirements.

Can continuing students apply for these funding opportunities?
All students are eligible to apply for scholarships and student employment opportunities listed above. Grants will automatically be reviewed for all admitted students with a valid FAFSA on file.
Who awards these funds?
It varies. Scholarships are submitted and reviewed by the committees as indicated. Grants will automatically be disbursed by the WVU Hub. Student employment funds are earned as a paycheck, and the stipends are paid by the employer directly to WVU.
